What would you talk about?
Patrick told us about the song “If I Could Have a Beer with Jesus” in our small group one Wednesday morning. “Wouldn’t that be cool?” he said, “To be able to sit down and have a beer with Jesus.”
I’d heard the song a few weeks earlier. It sparked a long train of thought in me at the time because I was an hour into a long drive. I’d formed some strong opinions about the message presented in this song.
Patrick’s question caused a dam to burst in me. The words tumbled out. The guys in our group know I get passionate when I talk. But they seemed surprised when I jumped in like I’d stepped on a hot coal.
Every beer with Jesus
“We’re supposed to have the Holy Spirit inside us!” I said. “We should be talking to Jesus all the time.”
Every beer we drink is a beer with Jesus. I went through all the Bible verses that say the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is always with us. The Holy Spirit talks to us. It should be normal for us to talk to Jesus. And it should be happening all the time!
That being said, I love the sentiment of this song. The problem I have is that I live most of life not paying attention or trying to listen to Jesus via the Holy Spirit. And I think this kind of lax attitude hits most of us who claim to love Jesus. The reason I meet with my group of guys each week is to help me better pay attention to my life. They help me remember to pay attention to Jesus.
Making time for beer with Jesus
Our group meets in the mornings. So we drink coffee. But, if we meet at night, we call it “Beer with Jesus.” It’s our way of reminding ourselves that Jesus is part of all of life.
I’ve learned that paying attention is a skill. And it’s a skill I’m trying to improve. My goal is to be able to slow down and listen to Jesus no matter what. “Beer with Jesus” is my way to remind myself that Jesus is always ready to sit and talk. It’s up to me to take the time.
