Jesus is Holy!
And at the same time he wants a close relationship with us. How do we balance these two truths?
How do we relate to a holy God?
The Old Testament paints a picture of God who is holy. He is separate from us. And we can’t get close to him because he is pure and we are not. Those few who had a God-encounter were scared spitless. Moses had the audacity to ask to see God’s glory. God told him that no one can see his face without dying. God let Moses see his back side as he passed by. And the experience left Moses with a glow lasting for weeks.
But Jesus gives us access to the Father, and his Holy Spirit lives inside us. Where now is the “holy” for us?
We seem to have a measure of the holy in us. But sometimes God “shows up” in a way that leaves no doubt you have encountered real holiness. John was the disciple closes to Jesus. He says he’s the one Jesus loved. But he falls on the ground as if dead when he encounters Jesus in his Revelation.
God’s nature and holiness haven’t changed. But the fact he wants relationship with us is amazing.
