Jesus is God’s Truth Wrapped in Mercy
A preacher went to a mall in Texas to “tell the truth” about Santa. But no one wants to listen to truth unless it’s covered in mercy.
Santa isn’t coming to church
One of the biggest church fights I heard about was whether to have Santa as part of the Christmas program. I missed that meeting, but I heard about it.
One of the deacons fighting to keep the “tradition” of Santa was so passionate that it seemed he believed more in Sana than in Jesus. I tended to side with the people who thought Santa diluted the message that Christmas is about Jesus.
This short episode is my response to a pastor who took it upon himself to “tell the truth” about Christmas to people waiting in line to see Santa at a Texas mall. Here is the LINK to the news story. Pastor Dave made a video is his Christmas rant, and I put the audio into the podcast.
I can identify with Pastor Dave’s motivation. I used to be like him. Thank you Jesus that I wasn’t as extreme as he is. But I used to hold that truth is more important than mercy and grace. In some ways I was just as religious as Pastor Dave.
But this podcast is about freedom from religious bondage. The message of Christmas is that Jesus came as God’s truth wrapped in mercy and grace. Whenever the religious leaders pushed Jesus to defend the truth–judge sinners for being naughty–Jesus chose mercy every time. He yelled at the religious people instead.
This episode is recorded right before Christmas. And mercy and grace trump judgement all year long. That’s the truth you and I need to shout about.
